Abstract

The transport area provides a high potential for energy savings and little progress has been made so far, particularly in Brazil. The increasing concern, in Brazil and worldwide, for reducing the negative impacts of human activities in the environment comes up against a difficult problem to solve in urban transport, because of the high investments necessary to make feasible effective and little-polluting forms of public transport, increase, in a satisfactory way, the urban transport network, and install efficient anti-pollution equipment and/or use "clean" fuels. This paper reports results obtained in a prospective study carried out for six large Brazilian cities: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Brasilia, Curitiba, and Campinas. This was done for a planning period of fifteen years, based on alternative development scenarios, concerning the possible evolution of urban transport in Brazil, regarding the implications on energy consumption and environmental impact. (A) The French title of the paper is: "Transport urbain, énergie et environnement : une étude de six villes au Brésil".
