Abstract
Research directions for urban transport are discussed in this article by describing the doubts and uncertainties of the urban transport reality rather than by spotlighting specific current research areas. After a brief discussion of the formal sources of information on current urban transport research, the paper describes broad interest areas and perspectives, raises issues of concern and attempts to emphasise underlying research needs. In particular, such aspects as the urban fabric, available technology, transport supply and demand, accessibility and transport equity are raised as key research areas.
