Abstract

Concepts and data for the design and application of microcellular urethane foam for absorbing energy in automobile bumpers are presented. It is shown that by appropriate design techniques, peak force can be maintained constant even with variations in modulus as high as 6:1. Packaged absorbers, free energy blocks, and urethane faced bumpers are discussed.
