The intent of this paper is to facilitate the development of advanced traveller information systems (ATIS) for drivers in the United States who are 65 years of age or older by discussing what is known about older driver abilities, needs, and demographics, examining the results of several studies that have compared older drivers' to younger drivers' ATIS use, and by suggesting future research directions. As adults grow older, visual, cognitive, and motor abilities begin to decline, leading to decreased mobility and well-being. Use of ATIS may be a way of maintaining mobility and well-being in the older driver population. However, before the potential of ATIS can be maximised for older drivers, several issues need further research. (A)
