Abstract

The effects on traffic safety from the use of illicit drugs are still not known. The paper presents some recent studies carried out or is underway in the Netherlands: (1) a literature study to determine the effects of specific drugs on traffic behaviour, (2) a study to determine the use of certain drugs by drivers during weekend evenings and nights; and (3) a study on the effects of Ecstasy (MDMA) with respect to the driving performance. The author finally recommends future steps: changes in legislation and roadside procedures for determining drivers under the influence of drugs. Recommendations also concern legal medication.
