Abstract

Results of a study of the transport task and energy consumption by transport in Australia are briefly reviewed. The use of energy for personal mobility is identified as a major component of total transport energy consumption and one which has exhibited a strung rate of growth. Drawing on the Australian data and data from other countries, a conceptual model of the use of transport modes at various standards of mobility is presented together with the per capita energy requirements of each of these standards of mobility.
