Abstract

The network level of pavement management can make effective use of knowledge-based expert systems (KBES) in several areas. This paper first describes the process of network level pavement management and then indicates the major applicability of KBES. A generically based framework is used to describe the process, and its five major modules: a) data base; b) needs analysis; c) rehabilitation programming; d) maintenance planning and programming, and e) combined programming. A KBES example application for rehabilitation and maintenance strategies selection is presented. The paper presents a case example of a comprehensive, operational pavement management system.
