Abstract

A system to characterize the incidence and severity of injuries sustained by road users admitted to hospital was developed. This system uses a conversion table and computer programs which convert the International Classification of Diseases 9th Revision; Clinical Modification (ICD9CM)code descriptions of injuries to a 6 digit code which includes the severity of the injury as identified by the AIS.The data information system was then used to determine the effect of mandatory motorcycle helmet use legislation on the frequency and distribution of injuries sustained by motorcyclists.
