Abstract

Numerical simulation of occupant restraint systems is employed to help reduce both development time and costs. The use of simulation plays a central role in the case of the SMART airbag system. Here MADYMO version 5.1 3D has been used to provide design direction for various components and aid in establishing performance specifications for the complete system. SMART airbag system performance is validated using HYGE sled testing. The SMART airbag system is an adaptive restraint system that utilizes inputs on crash situations, occupant status and the vehicle environment to optimize the airbag system performance for an actual crash. The system is designed to function with improved performance over a wider range of crash situations than is possible with conventional systems that have no adjustment capabilities. (A)
