Abstract

To make reliable projections and consequence calculations, i.e. a forecast for the future, the basic material (data) required must be of an applicable quality and present to a satisfactory extent. Data also includes information about earlier deterioration, traffic development, bearing capacity, etc. Furthermore, models that can apply the present data for projection to a given time in the future are required. More European road authorities have applied a pavement management system (PMS) for this purpose, some for almost 10 years. This paper describes how the PMS has been applied by more than 180 road authorities in three European countries (Denmark, Germany and Norway) in connection with forecasting and budgeting of road maintenance for periods of up to 10 years at a time. (A) The German title of this article is: Anwendung des PMS zur Finanzbedarfprognose für Strassenunterhaltung.
