Abstract

The road networks in Eastern and Western Europe are of different qualities, but common for the road authorities in both parts of Europe is the fact that they often lack funds for highway maintenance. Due to the higher demands for cutback and retrenchment and the demands for an intact road network, the road maintenance has to be performed in an economically optimum way in future, pavement management systems have a role here. This paper will give a general introduction to the economic optimization method used by one of the most applied PM Systems in Europe. A system that has been developed in close cooperation with more than 180 road authorities in 3 European countries (Denmark, Germany and Norway). (A) The German title of this article is: Die Anwendung des Erhaltungs-Systemes der Strassendecken für die Optimierung der Auswahl der Richtigen Erhaltungsstrategie.
