Abstract

The accident reporting procedure maintained by the North Carolina State Department of Motor Vehicles provides a data base suitable for the evaluation of certain vehicle safety systems. The effectiveness of energy-absorbing steering columns and side door reinforcement beams has recently been evaluated by the author using these data. The major results of these studies are presented, together with a discussion of the method of analysis adopted in each case.
