Abstract
The majority of public transport journeys in Finland are paid for with smart cards. Methods for collecting data about the supply and demand of public transport using the Smart Card Payment System (SCPS) are outlined. Data obtained from the electronic payment system are ticket type, trip fare, line label, ID of scheduled departure, and time of boarding. The smart card data also includes the card ID. The SCPS data can be used for tariff, schedule, route and network planning. The compilation of statistics can be speeded up using SCPS data.
