Abstract

A questionnaire survey of 45 states concerning studded tyre usage, indicates that 60 to 61% of the passenger cars are equipped with such tyres. The weighted average is 20%. Future studded tyre use will be influenced by many factors. It is possible developments in design and manufacture may result in studs that will cause significantly less pavement wear. Modification of the bare pavement policy will accelerate the demand for all types of traction aids. Legislation to control the use of studded tyres is a possibility in some states.
