Abstract

Sensitive regions beside motorways have to be protected against traffic noise. Up to now, noise protection was mostly realised by construction of monotonous walls. The proposed presentation describes an innovative technique to reduce traffic noise by combining noise protection walls with an intelligent speed management by the use of a telematic system. This idea has already been realised, the Noise Protection Facility "MLA Gleisdorf" is located at the Austrian motorway Nr. 2 in the region of Gleisdorf. Due to the fact that vehicles' speed has a great influence on the related noise emission, noise protection will be realised by a dynamic speed management. The following values are measured and used as an input for the speed management: traffic noise, traffic volume, traffic speed and weather data (wind direction, wind speed, temperature, humidity and rainfall). The presentation describes an existing "intelligent" speed management facility which is unique in Austria. Maybe this presentation will serve as a "kick off" for further activities leading to an intelligent use of existing or planned speed management devices. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123193.
