Abstract

The experiment investigating the effect of a warning pennant in bicycles showed that vehicle drivers give more way to bicycles fitted with a pennant than to those without such a device. On highways with no oncoming traffic, the bicycle was generally passed from far enough however so that a bicycle with a warning pennant was passed from a longer distance. Actual risks are created on highways when there is oncoming traffic. In these situation, the warning pennant improved the safety of bicycle riders most directly.
