Engineering education and technical training has traditionally consisted of a standard lecture format, with occasional visual aids such as overhead projections for clarity. Recently educators and instructors have begun to question the effectiveness of such an approach, and are looking for methods to improve the transfer of information and student learning. The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Arkansas is using the computer to increase the effectiveness of instruction in civil engineering materials courses. Structural Materials (CVEG 2113), a required sophomore-level course dealing primarily with Portland cement concrete materials and mix design, is being used to test a number of computer-aided methods for instruction.
