Abstract

This paper shows how to estimate fuel consumption with the use of floating car data technology and using this information for navigation. Therefore, the main influencing factors on the consumption are specified. Some of them are the different forces which are directed against the direction of travel. They include acceleration, rolling, aerodynamic and grade resistance and are analysed in detail. It is explained how the work to overcome these forces can be calculated. This work can be used for an estimate of the combusted fuel. Such estimates can afterwards be compared for different street sections. New navigation strategies can make use of the result of this comparison. Thus the route with the smallest fuel consumption can be identified. Additionally the knowledge on average fuel consumption of a road section can be used by city authorities. They can adjust their traffic and urban planning accordingly.
