Abstract

The utilization of an automotive radar as a safety device which can assist the driver in avoidance or mitigation of the effects of rear- end collisions is discussed. The automotive radar detects hazardous situations by continuously measuring the distance to and the relative velocity of the vehicle in front of the equipped vehicle. The principles of operation and the structure of several types of automotive radars are described.
