Abstract

This paper outlines the work of the UTMC08 Project as part of the Urban Traffic Management and Control programme in the UK which aims to develop a new generation of transport management systems to replace traditional Urban Traffic Control (UTC) systems. UTMC08 is investigating the suitability of the National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP) for UK UTMC systems and is researching a method to allow the upgrade to UTMC of existing UTC systems without requiring complete replacement of current field equipment. This will be done through adoption of the NTCIP-based Simple UTC Protocol Specification (SUPS) to allow UTMC central computers to control current UTC site equipment. On-street trials by the UK's three leading UTC system suppliers will determine the suitability of SUPS for this purpose. (A*)
