Abstract

UTOPIA (Urban Transport Options for Propulsion systems and Instrument for Analysis) is a European DGVII project aimed at producing inventories, assessments and decision support tools concerning the market introduction of new propulsion systems and new transport concepts based on these systems. Most attention will be given to new propulsions systems and fuels for road based vehicles, which contribute to sustainability at the urban level. The project starts with an inventory of running and almost starting experiments, within Europe, with alternative propulsion and transport concepts. In this report, 26 Dutch demonstration projects are described. Fifteen projects focus on a technological innovation and eleven on a system innovation. If the projects are subdivided into propulsion system, it appears that the major share of the demonstration projects is dedicated to one or more electric propulsion system types. Both hybrid and 100% electric drivelines have a 50% share. Regarding new fuels most attention is given to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Most of the projects relate to passenger transport (73%), and the other projects (27%) are within freight transport. Most of the projects are small, and are situated within the Randstad area. In comparison with the other European projects, the Dutch projects: (i) pay relatively much attention to freight transport and less to individual transport; (ii) are numerous; and (iii) focus a lot on LPG and hybrid drivelines, and give less attention to CNG and the 100% battery vehicle.
