Abstract

The Sustainable ITS Project and Collaborative Center for Advanced Mobility at the University of Tokyo has developed the universal driving simulatorfor human, vehicle and traffic research. This high-fidelity driving simulator can be used for research involving vehicle development and evaluation, including human factors of driving in traffic. The universal driving simulator includes a traffic simulation system called KAKUMO, which can generate virtual traffic in the simulator scenario in real time. Up to 100 surrounding vehicles can be created and controlled. In this paper, the evaluation of the driving simulator with traffic simulation is described. A pilotexperiment was carried out to compare driving on a real expressway with the simulation. The results indicate that the traffic flow and the vehicle velocity were well simulated and comparable to the real driving situation. For the covering abstract see E134653.
