Abstract

The use of economic analysis for the purpose of evaluating safety projects is described. It is suggested that the current value of life statistic, developed for use in the evaluation of roading projects, is inadequate for evaluations in which safety is the only benefit. The most rational approach to determining a defensible value of life statistic is to list the various classes of loss associated with untimely death.
