Abstract

Local roads, covering both sealed and unsealed pavements make up over 85 per cent of the national road network consisting of about 980000 km. Most of these roads are the responsibility of local government, forestry and parks authorities, the mining industry and defence training establishments. Over the last 15 years ARRB has been actively involved in undertaking applied research and technology transfer activities to meet the specific engineering needs of those involved with local roads. Research and training undertaken has been based on addressing particular local road issues to gain greater value from the limited resources available for local roads. ARRB has completed over 50 studies of local roads, with research outputs estimated to save local government millions of dollars each year through improved safety , lower road cost and improved operations for the road user.
