Abstract

In this publication approximately one thousand terms have been compiled which are regularly used in The Netherlands and the Dutch speaking area of Belgium within the fields of road design, road and traffic management. The aim is to contribute towards providing a uniform and unambiguous usage of professional terms within the stated fields. When defining the terms the first question to be answered was what is it? When this question could not provide a sufficiently distinctive definition, the question subsequently asked was what is it for? Wherever possible related terms were categorised in hierarchically ordered clusters. The definitions of the terms were chosen in such a way that they relate to as many existing and currently developing sets of terms and directives as possible.
