Abstract

Participating in traffic is difficult, in particular at high speeds which were not foreseen as possible a century ago. Traffic is not only a difficult subject, it is also a dangerous one. A society which does not prepare itself better, is a bad society. Therefore you can learn much from traffic, but you have to learn when you are young. This education has to be better and more regular than it has been up to now, permanent traffic education should be introduced. Traffic education at primary and secondary schools, driver training as regards driving licences, information and enforcement by the police are only some parts of a permanent traffic education. The council for traffic safety in the Netherlands presents some recommendations for improving this permanent traffic education by the introduction of a point demerit system, driving licence for the moped, improved driver training, and new driving test for the renewal of the driving licence.
