The word "woonerf" is made from the Dutch words for living and backyard. The word "erf" refers to the general idea of backyard. The Netherlands were one of the first countries in the world to become acquainted with the phenomenon of "woonerf". Especially for municipalities this was a remedy for the problems caused by the increasing traffic burden in residential areas. In 1976, the woonerf received its legal status.
