Abstract

Variable Speed Limits (VSL) are successfully being implemented in Sweden, upon a 5-year trial period. Motorist acceptance is high for all applications, while the bulk of potentially cost-efficient objects will be VSL-controlled intersections. Experience is gained on developed applications, on improved technology and on management of VSL operations. A program is decided to implement another 20 cost-effective VSL sites until 2011, mostly atstop or give-way controlled intersections with secondary road flows from 1500 to 2000 vehicles a day and upwards. VSL is also a standard option in the preparation of the next National Investment Plan 2010-2021 to be decided by the Swedish Government late 2009. Furthermore, follow-up studies will be carried out to validate effects on road user behavior.
