Abstract
There are no legal specifications for the layout of jetties in the Netherlands. This leads to a haphazard design, if one can speak of design at all. Especially when the ferry does not operate (mostly during the night) when visibility is poor or the tide is high road users can be mislead in the true sense of the word. The author points out the necessity of using uniform elements like road signs, road marking, barriers, lighting and signposting.
