Vehicle and driver effects on junction gap acceptance.

Abstract

Empirical relationships between gap acceptance behaviour and the time taken to complete a turning movement are obtained for crossing and for merging turns at T-junctions. The differences between the median accepted gaps required by different classes of vehicles are explained in terms of the manoeuvre times of each class. The gap acceptance behaviour of men and women drivers is compared, and woman are shown to have longer median accepted gaps than men. The results are interpreted briefly in terms of road safety, and some comments on data collection methods are offered.
