Abstract

A preliminary study of the nonlinear behaviour of a structural system subjected to impact overload is presented. A simple model with five elements, representing the mass of the engine, the passenger compartment and the passengers, and their interconnecting structure is described. The test results are discussed in terms of both a simple theory and the practical problem of locating the engine with respect to the energy absorbing structure and passenger restraint system in a frontal crash.
