Abstract

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF TWO TEST METHODS USED TO INVESTIGATE VEHICLE HANDLING DURING BRAKING WHILE CORNERING: (1) CLOSED-LOOP TESTS WHERE THE DRIVER-VEHICLE-COURSE SYSTEM IS CONTROLLED AND (2) OPEN-LOOP TESTS IN WHICH THE DRIVER DOES NOT INFLUENCE THE DRIVING COURSE. IN THE FORMER TESTS THE DRIVER CHOOSES THE STEERING ANGLE AND DECELERATION SO THAT THE VEHICLE REMAINS WITHIN A MARKED LANE AND STOPS WITHIN THE REQUIRED STOPPING DISTANCE. DURING OPEN-LOOP TESTS, THE STEERING WHEEL IS FIXED BEFORE AND DURING BRAKING. THE AIM OF THE TESTS IS TO INVESTIGATE THE SIDE DEVIATION FROM THE INITIAL PATH OF THE VEHICLE AND ITS STEERABILITY CIRCUIT, AND THE YAW STABILITY. IMPORTANT FACTORS INFLUENCING HANDLING WHILE CORNERING ARE THE MOMENTARY BRAKE FORCE RATIO AND WHEEL LOAD ON EACH AXLE. THE MAIN INFLUENCING FACTOR IS THE CONSTRUCTIONAL BRAKE FORCE DISTRIBUTION, OTHER FACTORS BEING VEHICLE LOAD CONDITIONS AND MOMENTS OF INERTIA CONNECTED WITH THE WHEELS OR THE TOWING OF A TRAILER.
