Abstract

The optimum vehicle lighting for lit roads is now recognized to be a large area lamp with intensity intermediate between sidelights and present dipped headlights. Various proposals are discussed. For unlit roads in the long term conventional systems will have to give way to new techniques such as polarization or the adoption of variable beam systems responsive to the changing road scene ahead.
