Abstract

The Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) program will revolutionize transportation by creating an enabling communication infrastructure that will provide a wide range of safety applications. This research is to investigate the application of the VII technology for preventing run-off-road (ROR) crash caused by sharp curves. For this purpose, a VII-based driver warning system was designed and tested in a designed, rural-highway scenario by driving simulator experiments. The experimental results show that this system can significantly reduce the ROR collisions associated with highwaycurves. According to the survey of the tested drivers, the system is easyfor the driver to use and helpful to them in safely negotiating a curvy roadway.
