Abstract

The increasing volume of traffic on highways can result in dangerous situations when vehicles are changing lanes. The Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) program, a major intelligent transportation systems (ITS) initiative, seeks to revolutionize transportation by creating an enabling communication infrastructure. The VII based technologies can be applied for preventing collisions associated with lane changes. In this paper, a VII based Highway Lane Change Warning System (HLCWS) is designed and tested in adesigned urban highway scenario by driving simulator experiments. The test results show that this system will help drivers avoid unsafe lane changes and that the system has the potential to reduce collisions. According toa survey of the tested drivers, the system is easy for drivers to use andhelpful in making safe lane changes.
