Abstract

A mobile laboratory used in the monitoring of road surface (dry, wet, icy, snow conditions etc.) and visibility conditions along the superhighway is in place on the Trieste-Venezia turnpike/highway. In order to increase the accuracy of the mobile laboratory's localisation capabilities, an advanced system using the two largest satellite localisation systems in existence (GPS and Russia's GLONASS) was developed during the 1999 winter season to very satisfying results. This article describes the experimental stage, the results obtained and the performance level increase that was achieved.
