Abstract

The longitudinal dynamics of a highway vehicle are frequently represented by a first-order, constant-coefficient, differential equation with two fixed parameters. This representation is not especially valid in practice for these parameters vary erratically with time both within and across vehicles. In this research the quantitative limitations of the commonly first-order model were experimentally determined for steady-state driving conditions.
