Abstract

Four important features were prerequisites for the success of compulsory restraint wearing in Australia. They were a detailed specification for design, construction and installation of restraints; a multi layered system of quality control and inspection; enforcement; and education and publicity to increase awareness of the benefits of restraint wearing. Significant developments have occurred since the introduction of compulsory restraint wearing, and these have been consolidated to provide a readily accessible source of the development and evaluation of the benefits of mandatory restraint use (A).
