Abstract

Transient response of a vehicle be either disturbance response or control response. Disturbance response is caused by the application of an external force to the vehicle and control response results from an input to the steering system in the form of steering-wheel displacement. The various parameters are discussed under the following headings: equations of motion, steering during transient motion, external and internal inputs, response to lateral force, response to steering inputs, response to wind gusts, response to power and braking on cornering, under / over and neutral steering responses and desirable response times.
