Abstract

Vehicular emissions, as of now, account for more than 65% of air pollution in Delhi (India) and this figure is likely to increase to 72% by the turn of this century. This paper analyzes the nature and extent of vehicular pollution, and outlines vehicular pollution control strategies. The paper advocates technical measures, including inspection and maintenance for on road vehicles, engine derating and use of chemical additives for diesel smoke abatement, and use of alternate clean burning fuels for spark engine powered vehicles exhaust emission control. Administrative measures relating to revitalisation of vehicular population, traffic management and transportation planning are also suggested. (A) The French title of the paper is: "Pollution des véhicules à Delhi : sa nature, son importance et les stratégies de contrôle".
