Abstract

Seat-belt usage reduces traffic fatalities by ¼ and traffic injuries by ½ resulting in substantial monetary and psychological savings at both individual and societal levels. The potential value of large-scale seat-belt usage is particularly evident, considering that more than 50% of U.S. citizens will be injured in an automobile accident some time in their lives.Yet relatively few individuals use vehicular safety belts--the percentage of seat-belt wearers was only 10.9% of 150.000 drivers observed in 19 metropolitan areas from November 1977 through November 1979.This is the critical, national problem addressed by the present symposium!
