Abstract

There are only a few users of the road network realizing which efforts are needed to bring and to maintain the quality of the road on an acceptable level. Driving over the road the driver has expectations for what he can meet on the road. These expectations are based on own experience in the past and also on the recognition of these types of highway. It is essential that the driver perceives the properties of the road and the vehicle rightly and that his acting is not in conflict with the real situation. Drivers should be therefore be warned for unexpected occurrences on a uniform way by signals. Examples are a.o. alignment and carriageway marking at night and wet roads; water on the way, drainage and highway maintenance.
