Abstract

A comparison is made between the safety on level crossings and road crossings. Each year, there are circa 50 fatalities in collisions between a train and a highway vehicle. Level crossings are compared with four arms road junctions. The average number of fatal accidents per level crossing is the same as the average number of fatal accidents per road crossing per year. The risk for a fatal accident by a road user is greater at a level crossing than at a road crossing.
