Abstract

Partly because of the impressions of the CBR Driving Test Organization, the Royal Dutch Touring Association ANWB felt the need to know whether it was plausible that novice car drivers who had followed the ANWB driving course were relatively more often involved in crashes than novice drivers who had followed the 'ordinary' driving course. Assuming that this suspicion was correct, what are the possible causes and what can be done about them? It was not the ANWB's intention to empirically test the effect of their own driving course but, based on a literature study, to formulate suppositions that, if necessary, could be scientifically studied in a second phase. SWOV was commissioned to carry out this literature study. We looked for assessment studies and driving course models, research into obtaining and retaining skills, and studies of the effects of simulator training. Besides literature data, we also used data from the Periodic Driving Course Study and the Periodic Road Safety Survey.
