Abstract

Since the year 1979, traffic surveys have been held annually in Amsterdam, every year in a different part of this conurbation. Respondents keep a record of their daily trips in a diary, giving a general idea of their daily activities. In this paper the changes in the daily patterns are described shown by the results of periodic traffic surveys. Fewer and fewer people stay at home during workdays. In general, people spend more time outside the home, and the mobility therefore increases. The assumption that trips departing from home and eventually returning to home will get more complicated was not confirmed. The number of trips (always departing from home) on a workday have risen sharply, with a considerable role for the bicycle. (A)
