Abstract

Existing procedures for incident detection were tested and optimized. The only procedures investigated were those suitable for use on expressways and with observation points long distances apart. Procedures were tested with data obtained from traffic jam situations and simulation data. A hierarchical concept for incident detection is proposed. At the heart of this incident detection system is a simplified KALMAN filter process for monitoring large sections of road.
