Abstract

In addition to classical inductive loop detectors for traffic detection at signalized intersections, other detection technologies (e.g. video, thermal imaging, radar, magnetic field) are increasingly being offered and used. So far, however, technology-related and design-related properties and application possibilities have not yet been sufficiently examined in Germany in a scientific and manufacturer-independent manner. The main aim of this research project is therefore a compilation of application criteria for different detector technologies. For this • the state of science and technology has been researched; • criteria and parameters for the evaluation of the detection quality of the different detectors have been defined; • a test field has been set up and field tests were carried out over several months; • a method for the evaluation of the collected detector data has been developed; • recommendations, derived from the interpretation of the evaluation results, for specific applications in the field of light signals have been given. Using referenced and non-referenced testing methods, data collected at the test field was matched against environmental influences and traffic loads and then evaluated. The data were checked for availability, integrity, consistency and validity. Furthermore, each detection technology was tested for suitability concerning traffic count, green time extension and green time request. By linking the defined quality parameters with the conditions at the test field (traffic loads, brightness and precipitation), causes of error and influencing factors on the quality of the detections for the various detectors and – if generalizable – detection technologies have been determined. From the point of view of the research, there are no deployment restrictions for certain technologies. Also, with regard to the boundary conditions, such as positioning of the detectors, an equally high recommendation can be made for all detectors. (Author/publisher)
