Abstract

It was considered necessary to verify the maintenance guideline for the longitudinal evenness of primary state roads (highways), in view of the considerable length of the state road network that have to be maintained, and the cost of so doing. In order to obtain the necessary data, the Road and Hydraulic Engineering Division of the Public Works Department took part in an experiment with a rating panel on the DAF Trucks BV test track facility. Extensive measurements were also carried out on the same test track facility with an APL profilometer. In addition to this, the APL profilometer was examined by the Delft University of Technology. The results of subjective panel ratings and objective measurements were statistically analysed by the Dutch Institute of Applied Informatics (INI TNO). A relation between the panel ratings and APL measurements was derived and consequently the maintenance guideline for longitudinal evenness was verified. The paper also pays some attention to road safety, as an aspect connected with the rideability of road surfaces.
