The role of traffic and transport in their relationship with sociological developments is outlined. The historical phonomena which are the cause of it are outlined. The effects of an economic recession together with the high prices of energy-intensive products and services are discussed. For the near future there will be a stress between the demand of transport and the development of the operating costs. A more integral approach by all participants in a norrow correlation with and a more intensive cooperation in traffic and transport science is essential.
