Abstract

In this study, the quality and capacity of the public transport system in the Dutch region of Utrecht is examined for 2000 and 2015. Does the quality and capacity meet the requirements of the travellers or do problems occur? Based on the determination of bottlenecks, several suggestions can be made to improve the quality and capacity of the public transport system in the Utrecht region. These suggestions concern three dimensions: the infrastructure, the surrounding functions and the organisational dimension. The infrastructure in this region has a very monocentric configuration. All transfers take place at Utrecht Central Station. This puts an enormous pressure on the quality and capacity of this node. This monocentric configuration makes the network susceptible to external disturbances. By establishing several tangential lines between different nodes (not Utrecht CS), the system will become more solid and will stimulate the spatial development of several other nodes within the region. Until now, this opportunity for the spatial development of the nodes is not used. To use this potential of the nodes and to extend the public transport network of the Utrecht region, the different actors involved in the planning and realisation of infrastructure, the nodes and other aspects of spatial planning, must collaborate more intensively. At the moment, there are many actors involved in the development of the public transport system and the nodes. No actor is responsible for the regional developments.
